In the noon fixture, Arsene Wenger inaugurated his Arsenal farewell tour in appropriate style with a 4-1 win against West Ham in a near full Emirates Stadium. After a goalless first half the Gunners were still somewhat flat in the early periods of the second, with Nacho Monreal’s (51″) goal being cancelled out by Marko Arnautovic (64″). The party however started with miscommunication from Declan Rice and Joe Hart; leading to Aaron Ramsey’s cross finding its own way into the net. Two quickfire goals from Alexandre Lacazette (85″, 89″) sealed the win which could be considered to have slightly flattered Arsenal today.
Paul Lambert and Stoke City were left dejected after securing only a 1-1 draw against Burnley at the Brittania, with Mame Biram Diouf nearly doubling their lead before half time and Stephen Ireland curling a shot from 20 yards just wide in the dying minutes; missing out on earning three crucial points in their losing fight against relegation.
In the later game, Manchester City swept away Swansea City 5-0 at the Etihad in the exact fashion to how they have done so to most teams all season. It means that despite remaining 4 points clear of Southampton and Stoke, Swansea take heavy damage to their goal difference, which could punish them depending on how the Saints’ remaining fixtures pan out. The final fixture of the season for the Swans is a potential six pointer against Stoke.
